March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March 31, 2026

In my work with Medovent Solutions supporting cancer registries nationwide, I’m reminded every March that colorectal cancer is both common and, in many cases, highly preventable. In 2023, an estimated 153,000 people in the U.S. were diagnosed with colorectal cancer and more than 52,000 died from it, making it a leading cause of cancer death.

From a registry and data quality standpoint, a few realities stand out:

  • Colorectal cancer remains one of the most preventable cancers when screening detects polyps or early-stage disease before symptoms ever appear.
  • A growing proportion of cases are being diagnosed in adults under 50 reinforcing the need to document age, family history, and symptoms onset with precision.
  • High quality abstraction of stage, tumor location, and treatment timelines directly informs how health systems adjust screening outreach, especially to younger and high-risk populations.

At Medovent, our oncology data specialist professionals partner with hospitals to ensure colorectal cases are captured completely and accurately – not just to check a box, but to drive smarter prevention, earlier detection, and better outcomes. This March, I’m encouraging my network to do 2 things: stay current on colorectal screening recommendations and never underestimate the power of clean data to change the trajectory of this disease.

AWARENESS IS THE START. DATA AND ACTION ARE HOW WE MOVE THE NEEDLE ON COLORECTAL CANCER.
