Position Overview
The CDI Managing Consultant serves as a senior leader and subject matter expert within the Clinical Documentation Integrity consulting practice. This position oversees the design, implementation, optimization, and ongoing success of CDI programs for multiple client organizations, ensuring delivery excellence, regulatory compliance, and measurable financial and quality outcomes.
The Managing Consultant leads project teams, builds trusted client relationships, and contributes to business growth through thought leadership, client engagement, and the development of consulting services.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to CDI consulting engagements from assessment through implementation, optimization, and sustainment.
- Ensure client projects are completed on time and meet established quality, scope, and performance expectations.
- Serve as a primary client advisor and build strong relationships with executive leaders, physicians, coders, and operational stakeholders.
- Assess client CDI programs, identify opportunities for improvement, and develop strategic recommendations that enhance documentation quality, compliance, reimbursement, and quality outcomes.
- Design, implement, and optimize CDI workflows, policies, procedures, and best practices aligned with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.
- Lead, mentor, and supervise CDI consultants and specialists by providing coaching, performance feedback, and professional development.
- Conduct concurrent and retrospective documentation reviews, audits, query validation, and DRG reconciliation.
- Monitor CDI performance using metrics such as Case Mix Index (CMI), Severity of Illness (SOI), Risk of Mortality (ROM), query compliance, documentation accuracy, and physician response rates.
- Analyze audit findings and provider performance trends, create improvement plans, and provide targeted education to physicians, CDI specialists, and coding teams.
- Develop and deliver CDI educational programs, workshops, and training materials for clinical, coding, and CDI professionals.
- Collaborate with coding, quality, compliance, revenue cycle, and clinical leadership to improve documentation practices and organizational performance.
- Ensure compliance with CMS, ICD-10-CM/PCS, AHIMA, ACDIS, AHA, AAPC, and other applicable regulatory and industry standards.
- Maintain current expertise in DRG methodologies, documentation guidelines, coding regulations, quality measures, and risk adjustment.
- Support the implementation and optimization of CDI technology platforms, including Solventum, Optum, Epic, and SmarterDx.
- Develop and maintain client CDI policies, procedures, reporting tools, and key performance indicators.
- Present program results, audit findings, and improvement recommendations to client leadership and executive stakeholders.
- Participate in internal and client meetings to resolve issues, share best practices, and support continuous process improvement.
- Contribute to thought leadership, webinars, conference presentations, and the development of new consulting services.
- Identify emerging trends in CDI, coding, clinical quality, and risk adjustment to strengthen consulting strategies and client outcomes.
- Maintain all required professional licenses and certifications.
Required Skills and Experience
- At least five years of progressive CDI experience, including a minimum of three years in a consulting or multisite leadership role.
- Demonstrated success designing and implementing inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory CDI programs across diverse healthcare settings.
- At least two years of inpatient coding or CDI experience; ICD-10-CM/PCS experience is preferred.
- Experience with ICD-10 diagnoses and procedures, PSI/HAC, Elixhauser Comorbidity Index, MS-DRG, APR-DRG, quality programs, E/M, CPT, CMS-HCC, HHS-HCC, and regulatory compliance.
- Experience assigning APCs and familiarity with UHDDS, CMS, and Joint Commission documentation requirements.
- Experience managing client relationships, consulting projects, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Comprehensive knowledge of medical diagnostic and procedural terminology.
- Strong knowledge of disease processes, anatomy, physiology, critical laboratory values, medical necessity, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and medication administration.
- Knowledge of multiple medical specialties and procedures within acute and critical care settings.
- In-depth knowledge of outpatient and ambulatory risk adjustment concepts.
- Ability to perform detailed chart analysis, identify documentation or coding issues, and communicate findings clearly and concisely.
- Exceptional leadership, organization, interpersonal, and client-service skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, presentation, and written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to translate data and audit findings into strategic, actionable recommendations.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, special projects, and deadlines in a fast-paced, client-facing environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, coding professionals, executives, and other stakeholders, including during conflict resolution.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Teams, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
- Proficiency with CDI software and electronic health record systems such as Epic, Optum, 3M/Solventum, and Iodine.
- Ability to pass a written clinical competency assessment.
Education and Required Credentials
- BSN degree or active RN license.
- Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) credential.
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credential.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional ACDIS or AHIMA-related credentials, such as CCDS-O, CRC, CPC, or COC.
- Experience working within a large academic medical center or healthcare organization.
