Position Overview

Medovent Solutions is seeking an Interim Executive Director of Hospital Billing Coding to provide strategic and operational leadership over inpatient and outpatient coding operations across a multifacility health system.

This is a transformational leadership role requiring a hands-on executive who can conduct a comprehensive assessment of current coding operations, identify the root causes of bottlenecks and inefficiencies, stabilize day-to-day performance, and deliver a clear, actionable plan for sustainable improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide executive oversight of inpatient and outpatient hospital billing coding operations across all facilities within the health system.
  • Conduct a comprehensive current-state assessment of coding workflows, staffing structures, productivity, quality, and technology utilization.
  • Identify the root causes of coding bottlenecks, backlogs, operational inconsistencies, and inefficiencies.
  • Develop and present findings, a detailed gap analysis, and a prioritized improvement plan to executive leadership.
  • Design and implement process improvements, standardized workflows, and quality controls that produce measurable and sustainable efficiency gains.
  • Partner with Health Information Management, Clinical Documentation Integrity, Revenue Cycle, and Information Technology leadership to align coding operations with broader organizational goals.
  • Provide visible, hands-on leadership to coding teams during a period of transition.
  • Stabilize team performance, strengthen morale, and establish clear operational expectations.
  • Ensure compliance with official coding guidelines, regulatory standards, and payer-specific requirements across inpatient and outpatient coding.
  • Use Epic to evaluate workflows, identify system-related barriers, and recommend workflow or system-build improvements.
  • Establish meaningful performance measures and use operational data to monitor productivity, quality, backlogs, and progress.
  • Serve as a change agent by strengthening accountability and promoting a culture of continuous improvement throughout the coding function.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven executive-level leadership experience overseeing hospital billing coding operations across both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Demonstrated experience leading coding operations within a multifacility healthcare organization or integrated health system.
  • Strong working knowledge of Epic, including the ability to navigate the system directly and evaluate coding workflows.
  • Successful track record of conducting operational assessments and translating findings into practical, actionable strategies.
  • Deep understanding of inpatient and outpatient coding guidelines.
  • Strong knowledge of Diagnosis Related Group and Ambulatory Payment Classification methodologies.
  • Comprehensive understanding of applicable regulatory, compliance, and payer requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify operational barriers, improve workflows, and deliver measurable performance improvements.
  • Strong analytical, written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Executive presence and the ability to communicate complex findings clearly to senior leadership.
  • Ability to build trust and work effectively with frontline coders, operational leaders, and executive stakeholders.

Preferred Credentials

One or more of the following credentials is preferred:

  • Registered Health Information Administrator
  • Registered Health Information Technician
  • Certified Coding Specialist
  • Equivalent coding or Health Information Management credential
