Position Overview

The Inpatient Clinical Documentation Integrity (ICDI) Specialist is responsible for reviewing patient medical records to ensure the documentation accurately represents the patient’s severity of illness, expected risk of mortality, complexity of care, and medical necessity of services.

This position will perform standard CDI functions with an emphasis on following up on prior ICDI reviews, completing reconciliations, and reviewing weekend stays across all service lines. Reconciliation work will take priority over new cases. Risk-adjustment coding experience is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Review inpatient and/or outpatient medical records to capture an accurate representation of each patient’s severity of illness and support appropriate coding.
  • Prioritize reconciliation and follow-up activities related to previously completed ICDI reviews.
  • Review weekend stays across all clinical service lines.
  • Validate that coding supports the medical necessity of services and accurately reflects severity of illness, expected risk of mortality, and complexity of care.
  • Ensure documented discharge diagnoses and comorbidities completely and accurately reflect the patient’s clinical status and care.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of pathophysiology, disease processes, and medications to identify documentation gaps.
  • Identify opportunities within concurrent and retrospective inpatient medical documentation to support accurate, effective coding and quality reporting.
  • Apply regulatory and compliance requirements related to documentation, coding, and billing across health insurance plans.
  • Facilitate appropriate documentation updates through collaboration with physicians, coding professionals, case management, nursing, and other caregivers.
  • Serve as an educator, resource, and change agent for physicians and allied health professionals to improve the quality and completeness of clinical documentation.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with ethical and legal business practices, federal and state regulations, official coding guidelines, accepted coding standards, and applicable clinical documentation policies.
  • Work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends, when required to meet business needs.

Required Education and Credentials

Candidates must hold:

  • A current CCDS or CDIP certification; and
  • At least one of the following professional credentials:

    • RHIT
    • RHIA
    • RN
    • CCS
    • CCS-P
    • Medical degree

Required Experience

  • At least two years of experience in an Inpatient Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialist role.
  • Experience conducting concurrent medical record reviews in an ICDI setting.
  • Recent experience in a production-based role within the past 12 months.
  • Demonstrated analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate ideas and clinical concepts effectively to physicians, management, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a creative, fast-paced, and challenging work environment.

Preferred Experience

  • Risk-adjustment coding experience.
