Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Pacific Time
Contract Term: 26 weeks, with potential extensions based on performance
Systems: 3M 360 and Epic
Anticipated Start: Approximately three weeks after offer acceptance, subject to HR clearance and IT access

Position Overview

The Inpatient Concurrent Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Specialist will use clinical expertise to conduct concurrent reviews of inpatient medical records. This position ensures documentation accurately and completely reflects each patient’s severity of illness, risk, complexity of care, and quality outcomes.

The specialist will collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals while supporting accurate MS-DRG classification and compliance with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct concurrent reviews of inpatient medical records for documentation accuracy, completeness, and clinical support.
  • Identify missing, conflicting, ambiguous, or incomplete documentation.
  • Prepare and submit compliant physician queries when clarification is needed.
  • Collaborate with physicians, coding professionals, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Support accurate MS-DRG assignment and documentation of severity of illness and risk of mortality.
  • Perform quality-focused, mortality, and risk-adjustment reviews as assigned.
  • Apply applicable CMS regulations, coding guidelines, and organizational compliance standards.
  • Maintain assigned productivity and query expectations once established by the healthcare organization.
  • Communicate effectively with team members in a fully remote work environment.

Required Education, Licensure, and Certifications

  • Medical degree as an International Medical Graduate or an active RN license.
  • Current CCDS or CCDIP certification.

Required Experience

  • At least two to three years of Clinical Documentation Specialist experience.
  • Experience conducting concurrent inpatient medical record reviews.
  • Working knowledge of MS-DRG classification and clinical documentation compliance.
  • Experience with healthcare technology systems; 3M 360 and Epic experience is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively within a remote team.
  • Strong technical proficiency.

Preferred Clinical Experience

Experience in one or more of the following specialties is preferred:

  • Obstetrics and gynecology
  • Pediatrics
  • Inpatient psychiatry

Preferred Skills

  • Quality-based reviews
  • Mortality reviews
  • Risk-adjustment tools and methodologies

Remote Work Requirements

Candidates must have:

  • High-speed internet access
  • At least two computer monitors
  • A dedicated workspace, preferred
  • The technical ability to work efficiently in a fully remote environment
