Position Overview
The Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialist (CDIS) is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of clinical documentation within patient health records. This work supports quality patient care, accurate coding, appropriate reimbursement, and adherence to regulatory requirements.
The CDIS serves as a liaison among clinical, coding, and quality teams to improve documentation so that it accurately reflects each patient’s clinical condition and severity of illness while complying with CMS, state, and facility guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Review inpatient health records for documentation accuracy, completeness, clinical support, and compliance.
- Identify documentation gaps and opportunities affecting severity of illness, risk of mortality, quality reporting, coding, and reimbursement.
- Apply knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS coding and DRG assignment when reviewing patient records.
- Develop and submit compliant provider queries when clarification is required.
- Collaborate with physicians, coding professionals, quality teams, and other healthcare stakeholders.
- Support accurate reporting under the CMS Inpatient Prospective Payment System.
- Apply applicable risk-adjustment methodologies and value-based purchasing requirements.
- Ensure documentation practices comply with federal, state, CMS, and organizational standards.
- Communicate documentation findings and recommendations clearly and professionally.
- Maintain established productivity, quality, and compliance standards.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must meet one of the following clinical or HIM pathways:
- RN or BSN with a strong clinical background;
- Foreign medical graduate with a strong clinical background; or
- RHIA-, RHIT-, or CCS-credentialed HIM professional with significant inpatient coding experience.
Additional requirements include:
- At least three to five years of experience in clinical practice, inpatient coding, or a CDI role.
- Previous experience using both Medhost and Iodine.
- Proven knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS coding.
- Experience with DRG assignment and compliant query processes.
- Familiarity with CMS Inpatient Prospective Payment System requirements.
- Knowledge of risk-adjustment methodologies and value-based purchasing programs.
- Professional communication skills and conduct.
Required Certification
Candidates must hold at least one of the following:
- Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist through ACDIS
- Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner through AHIMA
- Certified Coding Specialist through AHIMA
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing, Health Information Management, or a related healthcare field.
- Clinical experience in a Critical Care Unit or Intensive Care Unit.
- Significant inpatient coding or CDI experience.
Schedule Notice
The confirmed schedule is Monday–Friday for 40 hours per week. An every-other-weekend rotation may be required, but this requirement remains under review and will be communicated once confirmed.
